On Tuesday 14th Wolverhampton City Sports Advisory committee held their annual awards ceremony which was hosted by the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Dr Michael Hardacre and was held at Fordhouses Cricket club. Ruth Brooks, Chris Brooks and myself attended to represent the club.
It was a very special evening where many athletes, coaches and sporting organisation were presented with trophies and certificates. Listening to the citations was an extremely humbling experience. Many individuals had given decades of voluntary service to their sports and organisation. A gentleman of 92, recently crowned a national champion of table tennis was a recipient of a 'masters of the year' award. At the other end of the scale of awards was the 17-year-old Wimbledon Junior male champion 2023 from Wolverhampton and the first British winner in 62 years. Other awards represented sports included Netball, Cricket, Football and Hockey.
There were 3 winners from Wolverhampton & Tettenhall Hockey Club!
Barbara Oliver who has been playing since a young teenager was awarded a well-deserved masters award. Her citation included reference to her national and international playing achievements and her involvement in the sport as team capt, club capt, secretary, chair, back2hockey, walking hockey and her enthusiasm in promoting the great game of hockey.
German Singh was also awarded masters trophy. His citation was an extremely impressive list of clubs, National and International medal achievements which spanned the globe. He hopes to add to this list in South Africa in 2024. I was honoured to be able to accept this award on his behalf.
Tim Lorrimer accepted an award for Walking Hockey and a Chat which he initiated and organises. This sport has only been running for about 18 months and started with 3 participants. It now has a register of 36 which shows how much it was needed, especially by more mature people in the city. It offers exercise, company, friendship, improved mental health and a hot drink and chat in the warm! They also play competitive matches. Our club is pleased to be able to offer some financial support to this very worthwhile activity.
CONGRATULATIONS and well done to all our award winners. WATS are very proud of you.
